We’ll beat this

“IS she still alive? Where is she? I want to see her at once!”
Jiang Dejia, a Junior 2 student in Shifang Yinghua Middle School in Deyang, said this when she was rescued (
营救) from the rubble of a school building hit by the May 12 earthquake.
“She” is a Junior 3 girl from the same school called Liao Li.
Liao is a Junior 3 student who was also buried in the remains of the school.
Jiang and Liao didn’t know each other before the earthquake. But they inspired each other to keep going during the two scary days they spent trapped (被困).
Later Liao was rescued too.

“We were on the edge of death but friendship got us through. I’ll never forget it as long as I live,” said Jiang.
Hundreds of thousands of students like Jiang and Liao were in the same situation on May 12. On that day, the biggest earthquake in China for more than 30 years hit Wenchuan, Sichuan. Several thousand middle school students and teachers ended up buried. Buildings went down and cities were leveled (夷平).
As of Friday the earthquake has killed about 23,000 across the country. The number is very likely to grow. While people in the affected (受影响的) areas are facing death and disease, they know the whole nation is standing firmly behind them.
Only two hours after the quake, Premier Wen Jiabao got on a plane to Chengdu. The 66-year-old has been in the worst-hit areas to lead rescue work. Once he fell down and hurt his arm in the rubble, but he brushed off offers of help.
Soldiers and policemen were not able to get into Wenchuan at first because of bad weather and blocked roads. About one day after the quake, the first army group reached the epicenter (震中) on foot. Since then, soldiers have been digging with their fingers to try to find people alive. Helicopters (直升机) have been called in to airdrop (空投) food, water and medicine for people in the quake-hit areas. Medical teams have been sent in. People are racing against time to save lives.
People outside of Sichuan, including overseas Chinese and people in other countries, are offering money, blood (血) and materials to help.

Moving on after such pain

THE earthquake affected the students of the destroyed areas in many ways: losing parents, being scared and feeling lonely. How can we help them? Teens reporter talked with Lin Dan, the program director of the Sunshine in Your Heart Project (心灵阳光工程) at the Red Cross Society of China.

Q: How will the earthquake affect the teenagers mentally (心理上)?

A: They'll have feelings of fear, anger and feel they are not safe. They will find it hard to focus. They will tend to cry and shout and tremble (颤抖). And they might be afraid to be alone.

Q: What will happen if they are not helped?

A: The teenagers will find it hard to live in a balanced way. If things get worse they might not be able to focus on their studies. They might give up on life.

Q: How can we help them overcome these problems?

A: The first thing is to build up trust with them. Show your sympathy (同情) and sadness, and be their friend. Then you have to give them a sense of safety. Tell them that there's a solution to every problem. Thirdly, try to satisfy their psychological (心理的) needs. Be a good listener if he or she needs to talk.

Q: Some of us were not directly affected by the quake but have seen images on TV and feel scared. What should we do?

A: Talk with an adult and/or share your feelings with someone who might feel similar. If this doesn't help then you should see a doctor for professional help.

Stay well in earthquake

Lights are turning on and off. Things are falling off the desk. The ground (地面) is shaking… What’s going on? It’s an earthquake! A big earthquake hit (袭击) some cities and towns in southwest China last Monday.

Lights are turning on and off. Things are falling off the desk. The ground (地面) is shaking… What’s going on? It’s an earthquake!

A big earthquake hit (
袭击) some cities and towns in southwest China last Monday. Did you feel (感觉) the earthquake? What happens (发生) in an earthquake? What should we do in it?

Why do earthquakes happen?
Is the Earth4 under your feet sleeping all the time? No. Sometimes it moves5.

Two pieces of the Earth suddenly hit against each other.
This shakes the ground, our houses and us!

What happens?

We feel a little shaking in a small earthquake.
Windows break and houses fall down. It can be very dangerous (危险的). Watch out!

Big or small?

How do we tell the scale (
级别) of an earthquake?

2-3
级:Only a few people can feel it.

4-5
级:Makes little damage (破坏).

6-7
级:Makes much damage.

8

What should we do?
Scientists are working hard on earthquakes. They try to predict (预测) them. Here are some tips:

1. Try to keep calm6.

2. If you are indoors (
在室内), hide under a desk or table.

3. If you are outdoors (
在室外), go to an open area (空地).

4. If you are at home, ask Mom or Dad to turn off the lights and stove (

Open the room doors if there is time.

Did you know?

There are some legends (
传说) about earthquakes around the world.

India: Four elephants stand on a turtle.
If any of these animals move, the Earth shakes.

Greece (
A strong wind is blowing under the ground. It tries to come out and makes earthquakes.

Japan:
It is sitting on a big fish. If the fish moves, Japan will shake.

A. Earthquakes do no damage to us.

B. We should turn off the stove in an earthquake.

C. We can feel all earthquakes.

5. Don’t go into a lift (
Get out of the lift quickly.

6. Make sure you wear shoes.

Share (
分享) these tips with your family and friends.

Hope despite tragedy
KANG Heng, 16, hasn’t been sleeping well in a tent (帐篷) the past couple of nights. Closing his eyes only brings repeated waves of terror (恐惧) from all that happened and, worse still, all that could have happened at around 2:30 pm last Monday.

The student in Dongcheng High School in Mianyang, Sichuan Province was on his way to class after an afternoon nap (小睡) when the destructive earthquake hit the area.

“It’s a complete shock! No sooner had I heard someone screaming ‘Earthquake!’ than I saw our classroom building being torn apart just in front of my eyes. The next second I saw a student jumping out of the window from the second floor,” Tang recalled (回忆).

As the electricity was cut off, his teachers shouted as loud as they could to assemble (集合) all the students in the school onto the playground. Although some were wounded by falling objects or injured while running out, they at least escaped death.

Thousands of people, young and old, were buried () in ruins, mostly in the small cities and counties, such as Wenchuan, Beichuan, Dujiangyan, Anxian and Qingchuan, which are surrounded by hills and mountains.

By last Friday, around 19000 people were confirmed dead because of the earthquake, which is the worst in China in three decades. And the number is still rising.

More than 100,000 troops (部队) have continued to arrive at destroyed areas since the day after the quake hit. And more neighboring people have volunteered to go and offer help.

Kang and his parents were among them. They drove in rain to Anxian County, an hour drive away from Mianyang, with water, instant noodles (方便面) and plastic for building tents. Kang’s family finally found his terrified grandparents in Anxian on Wednesday morning.

“We first thought the worst had happened to my grandparents. But they had a narrow escape and were rescued by kind people, who were totally unknown to us. We are thankful to them and hope to do whatever we could to help others,” said Kang.

1. Kang was taking an afternoon nap when the earthquake happened. ( )
2. People in hilly and mountainous areas suffered the most in this catastrophe. ( )
3. This destructive earthquake in the worst in China in 20 years. ( )
4. More than 100,000 troops have arrived immediately at destroyed areas after the earthquake. ( )
5. Neighboring people and the troops joined hands to save people buried in ruins. ( )

MORE than a week after the worst earthquake in three decades hit China, thousands of soldiers, aid workers and volunteers are still flooding into the disaster areas. Even though hope for finding more survivors has dimmed, people are not giving up. Millions of wounded and homeless residents are still in dire need of help.

Love, compassion and charity have swept across the nation, prompting millions of ordinary Chinese to donate money, blood and all sorts of relief materials for quake victims.

Volunteers are playing a very important role in helping these victims. Many have left their jobs and studies to travel to Sichuan. We are especially proud and moved to learn that hundreds of college graduates and young people, many of them our readers, are joining the voluntary campaign.

We'd like to thank them all for their selfless contribution, and we wish them the best of luck. At the same time, we'd like to ask other college students and young volunteers to study the situation carefully before setting off for Sichuan. Please make sure you are well-prepared, and that you can make a positive contribution to the relief effort.

The work of the young volunteers is of great value. But it also true that digging survivors from the rubble, dressing their wounds and giving them food is just the first step in helping them rebuild their lives.

There still remain many things to be done: from burying the dead and comforting the surviving to rebuilding roads, bridges, schools, houses, to rejuvenating local economies. These tasks will have to be tackled by professionals who will need all the help they can get.

Shocked by the sudden tragedy and driven by their kind hearts, many young people have rushed to contribute to disaster relief efforts. Donating a week's allowance or giving blood are both kind deeds. We have nothing but admiration for such selflessness. But there is more that can be done.

For example, some of you may want to consider becoming a pen-pal with the children in the devastated areas, encouraging them so that they can regain confidence for the future. Perhaps, when the new semester starts, some of your schools may welcome students from areas hit by the tragedy. Maybe you can help them settle into campus life. Thinking ahead, when you graduate, you may want to work in Sichuan as a teacher, engineer or doctor.

Emotions are running high across the nation. We need to channel these emotions into continued constructive efforts in the months and years to come.
